Inspiring Futures: The Air League and British Airways Combine Forces to Empower Aspiring Pilots

The Air League team was joined by members of the British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy Recruitment team, BA pilots at various stages of their careers, and Speedbird Academy cadets to lead engaging, hands-on sessions. These workshops were designed exclusively to support Air League members preparing to join the Speedbird Pilot Academy Cadet programme, offering valuable insider insights, practical advice, and expert tips to help them stand out in a competitive selection process.

The day began with a tour of British Airways’ Heritage Centre at Waterside, where participants explored the airline’s rich history and its connections to significant moments in British history, including links to Winston Churchill and the Royal Family. This engaging start set the tone for the sessions that followed.

Throughout the day, participants took part in practical workshops and insightful talks, with many particularly enjoying the opportunity to better understand their own personality traits and how their unique strengths could be applied in time-pressured team exercises. They also gained valuable insight from three BA pilots at different stages of their careers: one at the start of her journey, one who progressed via the modular route and now flies long haul, and an experienced captain with over three decades in the cockpit. Their openness and honesty about their own career paths added a personal dimension that resonated strongly with attendees.

It was great to see so many aspiring pilots fully engaged, listening intently, asking thoughtful questions, and absorbing every piece of insight shared throughout the day.

The facilitators spoke in detail about the key competencies required to become a fully qualified airline pilot. These included not only technical ability, but also  communication, teamwork, decision-making, and resilience. This session was made even more meaningful by the fact that the pilot delivering it was an Air League alumnus, whose own journey had been supported by a scholarship that helped him achieve his ambition.

Adding further value to the day, Speedbird Pilot Academy Cadets were also in attendance, offering first-hand insight into the application and training process. Their recent experiences gave attendees a relatable perspective and practical advice on how to navigate each stage of the journey, from application through to selection.

A key message that echoed throughout the sessions was the importance of confidence, passion, and determination in everything you do. Attendees were encouraged to believe in their abilities, stay driven in their ambitions, and, most importantly, remain authentic and conduct themselves with integrity. Being your true self is not only essential during recruitment assessments, but also a fundamental part of building a long and rewarding career in aviation.

The positive impact of the workshop was clear from the feedback received, with one participant sharing that it was: “Really engaging and insightful, and it was great to hear about so many people’s experiences, particularly from different stages in their career.”

The Air League’s CEO, Janine Hornsby, highlighted the importance of such initiatives:

“Workshops like this are vital in giving our members practical advice and tools that they can use when applying to cadet schemes. Partnering with BA allows us to provide meaningful, hands-on experiences that not only build confidence but also help aspiring pilots develop the skills they need to succeed. Together, we are helping to build a strong and diverse pilot workforce for the future.”

By combining industry expertise with The Air League’s commitment to broadening access to aviation, the event delivered a valuable and memorable experience for all involved. As the day concluded, it was clear that participants left feeling more informed, more confident, and even more motivated to pursue their aviation ambitions.

This collaboration marks another important step in supporting the next generation of pilots, ensuring they are not only inspired, but also prepared for the journey ahead.
