Students from Dudley Academies Trust took to the skies at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield, on 21 September as part of The Air League’s Soaring to Success career enrichment programme, delivered in partnership with The Education Exchange West Midlands.
Supported by Boeing and Millennium Point Trust Birmingham, the experience introduced young people to the principles of flight and the wide range of exciting career opportunities available across the aviation, aerospace and space sectors. More than just an introduction to these industries, the day demonstrated the transformative power of flight to build confidence, broaden horizons and inspire young people to aim higher in their future education and career aspirations.
As part of the experience, students were given the unique opportunity to take to the skies in a sailplane glider. More than simply flying as passengers, they were encouraged to take the controls once airborne, challenging themselves to step outside their comfort zones and overcome perceived limitations.
Through this unforgettable experience, students discovered that they are capable of far more than they may have imagined. The message was simple: if they can learn to fly an aircraft, they can achieve anything they set their minds to with determination, confidence and perseverance.
Throughout the day, learners also gained insight into airfield operations, aviation safety procedures and the principles of flight. Alongside developing new knowledge and skills, they built confidence, broadened their horizons and explored the exciting range of career opportunities available across the aviation, aerospace and space sectors.
At The Air League, we believe aviation has the power to change lives. By opening doors to new experiences and making aviation and aerospace more accessible, we help young people build confidence, raise their aspirations and discover opportunities they may not have thought possible.
For many of the students attending, it was their first visit to an airfield and their first opportunity to experience flight from an entirely new perspective, making the day truly memorable.

Experiencing flight first-hand can have a profound impact on young people. Beyond the excitement of being airborne, it encourages resilience, curiosity and self-belief, while demonstrating that careers in aviation and aerospace are open to people from all backgrounds.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the
day was watching students who had never flown before, take to the skies for the very first time. For many, it was an experience they had never imagined possible.
By the end of the visit, the shy and slightly apprehensive students who had arrived at the airfield that morning had been transformed. They left buzzing with excitement, a renewed sense of confidence and a greater belief in their own potential. Many were eager to learn more, asking questions about aviation careers, training routes and the opportunities available within the wider aviation, aerospace and space sectors.
The experience demonstrated how exposure to new challenges can inspire young people to think differently about their futures, raising aspirations and helping them see that exciting career opportunities may be closer than they ever realised.

One parent sent a special message of thanks to Rob for helping to make he son’s day so special. He had experienced a very difficult summer and the time, care and kindness Rob showed her son made a massive difference and really lifted his spirits.
The visit reflected the shared ambition of all partners involved, to provide young people with experiences that broaden horizons, challenge perceptions and encourage them to think differently about their futures.

Students were also treated to an exciting aerobatic display, showcasing the skill, precision and dedication that aviation demands. The display highlighted the many opportunities available within aviation and aerospace, whether in flying, engineering, operations, technology or the wider STEM sector.
