On Friday the 26th of July, the Air League hosted a panel discussion together with British Airways and IAG, focusing on aviation sustainability. Air League Trustee and British Airways 777 Pilot Andrew Perkins was joined by Jonathon Counsell; IAG Group Sustainability Officer, Dipeet Mehta; British Airways 777 Pilot, Air League Scholar and Volunteer, and Melissa Richardson MBE; British Airways Senior Emerging Talent Manager.

British Airways’ BA Better World scheme aims to minimise the airline’s impact on the planet and maximise its’ contribution to society. British Airways were the first airline to report its’ carbon footprint and the first airline to voluntarily participate in the UK emissions trading scheme. Its’ parent company, IAG, has committed to using 10% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030, alongside a commitment to be Net Zero by 2050.

The Air League is continuously focused on inspiring sustainable air-mindedness amongst young people: launching the UK’s first electric flying Scholarships in 2024. The Scholarships will see 3 successful applicants awarded a 5 hour fully electric Scholarship, to take place in a Pipistrel Velis Electro over the summer.

The Air League and British Airways enjoy a strong partnership, working together closely to inspire the next generation of aviators and Change Lives Through Aviation. The Trust thanks British Airways, Jonathon Counsell, Melissa Richardson MBE and Dipeet Mehta for their participation in the panel discussion and for their continuous support.
