On Wednesday 24th November the Air League welcomed scholarship and bursary recipients from 2020 and 2021 to the Royal Aeronautical Society, where they were recognised and presented with their certificates by Sir Christopher Harper, President of the Air League.

Over the past decade, Scholarships worth over £2 million have been allocated to young people across the UK. We look for individuals that have a flair for aviation and aerospace and the determination to succeed.

Additionally the 2021 Evelyn Saunders Memorial Cup was presented to Lucy Dakin-Scott by John Holland-Kaye, Chief Executive Officer of Heathrow Airport who delivered the 2021 Sir Andrew Humphrey Memorial Lecture on his vision for the UK’s future aviation strategy, sustainability, and recovery.

The award is presented each year to the most outstanding young female scholar. The cup was established in 2008, in memory of Evelyn ‘Evie’ Florence Saunders, a remarkable lady, who stretched the boundaries for female aviators of her generation. Piper PA-28 G-EVIE was donated to Tayside Aviation in Dundee, to run scholarships on behalf of the Air League Trust.

The 2021 recipient is Lucy Dakin-Scott aged 19 from Rotherham in Yorkshire. Lucy attended an aviation skills workshop and taster day under our ‘Soaring to Success’ Programme in 2019. The programme, supported by the Department for Transport and Boeing UK is the Air League’s industry leading youth outreach programme that not only inspires, stimulates, and encourages young individuals to consider a career within aviation and aerospace, but also acts as a catalyst to spark the inspiration and realisation that opportunities and possibilities are accessible. Lucy then continued through the stages of the programme and onto our scholarship scheme, under which she successfully completed her Private Pilot’s License in summer 2021. Lucy is currently studying at Barnsley Sixth Form College, and aims to continue her career within aviation and aerospace.

The Air League offers the broadest range of scholarships and bursaries in the UK, with over 100 opportunities being awarded annually. New opportunities are being introduced annually that will enhance the career pathways of future pilots, aspiring engineers and many other professional aviation disciplines.

If you are considering a career in aviation and aerospace, the Air League can offer you unrivalled support and help.
