On Tuesday 6th March 2018 The Rt Hon. Matt Hancock MP, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will be hosting the 2018 Slessor Lecture on Defence & Security in the New Space Age to be given by Gerard Donelan, Vice President, Security and Defence, SES.

The 2018 Slessor Lecture will be held at The Strangers’ Dining Room, House of Commons, Palace of Westminster, SW1A 0AA

Matt Hancock MP was appointed Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on 8 January 2018. He was previously Minister of State for Digital from July 2016 to January 2018.

Matt Hancock is the MP for West Suffolk, having been elected in the 2010 general election. From 2010 Matt served as a backbencher on the Public Accounts Committee and the Standards & Privileges Committee. Matt entered government in September 2012 and has served in a number of Ministerial Roles, including for skills and business, and as Paymaster General. He oversaw the expansion of apprenticeships, and championed the digital transformation of government.

Since July 2016 he has served at DCMS as Minister of State for Digital and is responsible for broadband, broadcasting, creative industries, cyber and the tech industry.

Before entering politics, Matt worked for his family business, as an economist at the Bank of England, and as Chief of Staff to the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He holds degrees from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The speaker for the 2018 Slessor Lecture will be Gerard Donelan, Vice President, Security and Defence, SES. Gerard has been with SES since 2003. Previously, he spent 14 years in the British military followed by 11 years in a number of positions for NATO, based in Norfolk, Virginia (USA) on the International Staff of the Supreme Allied Commander. These positions encompassed both NATO SATCOM and CRYPTO.

Gerard was involved in both land and maritime communications and he received several commendations for the work he undertook for NATO during this time. Gerard has more than 30 years’ experience in telecommunications and satellite communications, specializing on government use of commercial services. Gerard continues to use his knowledge, experience and contacts within NATO and European Governments and he is involved on NATO and EU working groups for satellite communications. He was a founder member of the innovative London Satellite Exchange and was the Director of European Sales for New Skies Satellites. Gerard is a regular speaker, presenter and invited chairman at military conferences and has chaired the Global Milsatcom Conference in London for the last 12 years. He is an invited speaker to United Nations, NATO and European Defence Staff Colleges on military space matters.
