On 7th August 2025, the Air League hosted a dedicated Careers Day at the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Aviation House, located at Gatwick Airport. The event welcomed approximately 30 Air League members, offering them a unique opportunity to engage directly with professionals working across the aviation sector and to gain insight into the varied career pathways that lead to roles within the CAA.

The Air League hosted a dedicated Careers Day at the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Aviation House.

Insightful Career Journeys

The day featured three guest speakers, all currently employed by the CAA, who shared their personal career journeys. Rather than focusing solely on their current roles, each speaker highlighted the diverse experiences that shaped their professional development prior to joining the CAA:

  • One speaker had served as a RAF Fast Jet pilot before transitioning to a role as an airline pilot, ultimately bringing that operational expertise into the CAA.
  • Another speaker had a background as a RAF Air Traffic Controller, offering attendees a perspective on military-to-civilian career progression.
  • The third speaker had worked as an Air Traffic Control engineer in the RAF, later taking on engineering roles at Dubai Airport and within civil aviation, before joining the CAA.

These presentations emphasised the breadth of experience that contributes to the CAA’s mission and demonstrated how skills acquired in military and international contexts can be successfully transferred into regulatory and operational roles within UK civil aviation.

Understanding the CAA’s Role

In addition to the career-focused talks, one speaker provided an overview of the CAA’s programme management cycle, helping attendees understand how the organisation plans, executes, and oversees its regulatory responsibilities. This session offered valuable context on the internal workings of the CAA and its role in maintaining aviation safety and standards across the UK.

Tour of Aviation House

Participants were also given a brief tour of Aviation House, the CAA’s main building at Gatwick. This behind-the-scenes experience allowed members to see the operational environment of the UK’s aviation regulator and gain a deeper appreciation for the infrastructure supporting its work.

A special thanks to Manali Pallegar, Brenda Jefcoate, and the wider CAA STEM Projects Team, whose coordination and support ensured a smooth and engaging experience for all attendees throughout the event.
