Victoria Cope: From Air League Engineering Scholar to Defence Leader

Scholar overview

Scholar: Victoria Cope

Scholarship awarded: The Air League Engineering Scholaships at Wycombe Air Centre and Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters)

Occupation: Commercial Director, Digital and Space, UK Ministry of Defence

As a teenager with ambitions of becoming a pilot and a fascination with engineering, Victoria Cope knew she wanted a career in aviation. What she lacked was practical industry experience. The Air League’s Engineering Scholarships provided that opportunity, giving her hands-on exposure to aviation engineering and helping transform a passion into a lifelong career.

Today, Victoria is Commercial Director for Digital and Space within the UK Ministry of Defence, leading complex programmes at the intersection of technology, defence and innovation. Looking back, she credits her Air League scholarships as some of the most influential early opportunities in her professional journey.

building a foundation

of aviation engineering

Victoria first discovered The Air League through a school careers newsletter. The opportunity immediately caught her attention, offering practical engineering experience within an industry she was determined to join.

Before receiving her scholarships, Victoria had already immersed herself in aviation through Air League STEM visits, independent

"The scholarships gave me confidence that I could take my academic knowledge and apply it effectively in a real-world aviation and engineering environment."

research and conversations with aviation professionals. However, she was eager to move beyond observation and gain first-hand experience.

That opportunity came through not one, but two Air League Engineering Scholarships. The second placement took place while she was studying Aeronautical Engineering at university, allowing her to connect academic theory with real-world engineering practice.

The placements exposed her to a wide range of activities, including:

  • Welding, machining, fabrication and assembly
  • Ground and flight testing
  • Computer-aided design (CAD)
  • Compliance verification
  • Technical reporting
  • Aircraft engineering operations

The experience provided both technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of how engineering teams solve real-world aviation challenges.

Learning skills

that last a lifetime

While the technical exposure was invaluable, Victoria believes some of the most important lessons came through problem-solving and critical thinking.

Working alongside experienced engineers taught her how to identify root causes, evaluate options, develop practical solutions and communicate recommendations clearly.

These skills have remained central throughout her career, even as she progressed beyond purely technical roles.

"The most valuable aspect was developing my critical analysis and problem-solving skills. Those same principles of evidence-based analysis, structured thinking and clear decision-making remain at the heart of my work today."

The scholarships also strengthened her communication, teamwork and professional confidence, providing early exposure to the collaborative nature of the aerospace industry.

Turning Ambition into a career

The impact of Victoria’s scholarships extended far beyond the placement itself.

Her first scholarship provided valuable evidence and practical experience that supported her application to study Aeronautical Engineering at university. The second helped her build the experience, confidence and professional network that contributed to securing her first permanent role in the aerospace sector.

After completing her studies at Loughborough University, Victoria went on to build an impressive career across aerospace, defence and commercial leadership.

Her achievements include:

  • Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering with Honours from Loughborough University
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) through the Royal Aeronautical Society
  • Executive MBA from Henley Business School
  • Fellowship of the Royal Aeronautical Society
  • Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply
  • Fellowship of World Commerce & Contracting

Throughout her career, she has continued to draw upon the technical foundation established during her early engineering experiences.

overcoming challenges

and building credibility

Entering the engineering profession presented its own challenges. As a woman working in what was then a heavily male-dominated environment, Victoria often felt she needed to prove herself.

Rather than allowing this to limit her ambitions, she focused on continual learning, thorough preparation and delivering high-quality work.

"I learned that credibility comes not simply from what you know, but from how you apply your knowledge, work with others and deliver results."

Looking back, she recognises that resilience and self-belief became just as important as technical knowledge. Those experiences helped shape the leadership approach she brings to her role today.

giving back to the

next generation

One of Victoria’s proudest achievements is now being in a position to support others entering the industries she loves.

Alongside her leadership responsibilities, she actively coaches, mentors and sponsors aspiring professionals, helping them build confidence, navigate career decisions and access new opportunities.

She is particularly passionate about supporting people from backgrounds that are under-represented in engineering, aerospace, defence and leadership.

Having benefited from mentors herself, she understands the difference that encouragement and role models can make.

the lasting impact of an

air league scholarship

For Victoria, the Air League scholarships were much more than work placements.

They provided professional exposure, practical experience, industry connections and, perhaps most importantly, the confidence to believe that a successful career in aerospace was achievable.

Today, she continues to build on the foundations first established through those early opportunities.

"The scholarship was one of my first significant stepping stones into a career in aerospace and engineering. It gave me more than technical experience. It gave me confidence, mentors and a belief that I could build a career in an industry I was passionate about."

leading the future

Victoria’s ambitions remain firmly focused on leadership and public service. She aims to continue progressing into senior executive roles, with a long-term aspiration of reaching the highest levels of leadership within the defence sector.

"Do it, and don't delay. These opportunities help you discover your strengths, explore your interests and develop skills that will stay with you throughout your career. Go in with an open mind, ask questions and embrace every opportunity. You never know where that first opportunity might take you."

Victoria’s journey demonstrates the lasting impact that early access to aviation and engineering opportunities can have. From Air League Engineering Scholar to senior leader in the Ministry of Defence, her story is a powerful example of how practical experience, determination and belief in your potential can shape an extraordinary career.
