Noah Barker: A Dual-Scholarship Journey into Aviation and Engineering

Scholar overview

Scholar: Noah Barker

Scholarship awarded: The Air League Three‑Hour Powered Flying Scholarship 2024 (South Warwickshire Flying School) and Engineering Scholarship 2025 (Affinity Flying Training Services)

Studying: Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University

When Noah Barker first applied for an Air League scholarship, he was driven by a long‑standing passion for aviation and inspired by a friend who had completed the programme the year before. What began as a three‑hour introductory flying experience soon evolved into a multi‑year journey spanning both flying and engineering, helping Noah build confidence, technical understanding and a clearer sense of his future in aviation.

Today, Noah is studying Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University, serves as an Officer Cadet on East Midlands Universities Air Squadron, and is working towards a future career as an RAF pilot. His pathway reflects how layered Air League opportunities can help young people discover and refine their ambitions.

The Scholarship Experience

Before receiving his first scholarship, Noah already had early exposure to aviation through five years in the Air Cadets, though he had only flown once in a glider. His Three‑Hour Powered Flying Scholarship provided his first opportunity to take the controls of a powered aircraft. Over the course of the flying lessons, he covered the fundamentals of flight and even made a landing, an experience that deepened his enthusiasm and showed him what life as a pilot might truly be like.

“My flying scholarship was a great introduction to flying, and the engineering scholarship gave me invaluable technical knowledge. Together, they helped me picture what my future career could look like.”

Following this, Noah undertook The Air League’s Engineering Scholarship, delivered by Affinity Flying Training Services. This programme gave him significant hands‑on technical exposure, allowing him to work closely with aircraft, understand engineering processes and gain insight into civilian engineering integrated with military operations.

Skills and confidence gained

Across both scholarships, Noah developed a blend of practical, technical and personal skills that continue to support him at university. His flying scholarship broadened his understanding of basic aircraft handling and gave him the confidence to explore a future in piloting. Meanwhile, the engineering programme strengthened his technical knowledge and gave him exposure to real‑world aircraft maintenance and operations.

These experiences helped Noah refine his goals at a crucial moment. The Air League programmes helped him make the informed decision to consider applying for an RAF DSUS Scholarship.

“The engineering scholarship showed me what my life could be like as a pilot or as an engineer. It helped me make an informed decision to pursue my dream of flying.”

Challenges and growth

Transitioning into university life brought new challenges. Aeronautical Engineering presented more demanding content and a faster pace than he had experienced before. To keep up with the workload, Noah had to quickly develop stronger time‑management strategies and study discipline, skills that were bolstered by the knowledge and confidence gained from the scholarships undertaken.

Today, Noah is successfully progressing through his degree while actively applying the foundational knowledge he gained through both programmes.

achievements and

professional development

Since completing his scholarships, Noah has achieved several milestones that have strengthened his journey in aviation. He successfully completed his A‑Levels in Maths, Physics and Engineering, something he is particularly proud of, and secured a place to study Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University.

Beyond academics, Noah has joined the RAF Volunteer Reserves and now serves as an Officer Cadet on East Midlands Universities Air Squadron (EMUAS), giving him further flying exposure and leadership experience. These achievements reflect both his dedication and the confidence built during his Air League experiences.

Giving back and

inspiring others

Noah is committed to supporting other young people aiming to enter aviation. He has been invited to speak on a Q&A panel at RIAT 2026 on the Inspire Stage, discussing pathways into flying for young people. Through EMUAS, he will also have opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the Jon Egging Trust Blue Skies Programme, helping inspire and uplift aspiring aviators.

“Being awarded two Air League scholarships meant a great deal to me… it showed that people believed in my potential.”

The air league impact

For Noah, his Air League scholarships provided far more than flying hours and technical knowledge. They gave him belief in his abilities, a clearer understanding of potential career routes and the experience needed to strengthen his university and RAF applications. His exposure at Affinity also broadened his understanding of aviation engineering in a civilian‑military context, helping him visualise long‑term pathways in both flying and technical roles.

The Air League is proud to have supported Noah as he takes confident steps toward a future career in aviation and the RAF.

Looking ahead

Noah’s goals for the future are clear and ambitious. He aims to complete his Aeronautical Engineering degree, progress further within EMUAS and secure a pilot bursary with the RAF, a pathway he is currently applying for.

“You’d be daft not to give it a shot, as the application could be your first step in a long aviation career.”
