Tyler Weaver: From Groundschool Scholar to Aspiring RAF Pilot

Scholar overview

Scholar: Tyler Weaver

Scholarship awarded: The Air League Bristol Groundschool Scholarship 2025, delivered through The Air League’s training partners, Bristol Groundschool

Occupation: Port Worker, Port of Felixstowe

When Tyler Weaver applied for The Air League Groundschool Scholarship, he was in the middle of his Private Pilot Licence (PPL) training and facing a significant challenge: completing all nine written exams within the 18‑month time limit, while balancing A‑levels, part‑time work and flight training.

With the clock already ticking after passing his Air Law exam, Tyler knew he needed structured support to stay on track. The scholarship provided exactly that, giving him the tools, guidance and confidence to complete his exams efficiently and continue progressing towards his goal of becoming a professional pilot.

The Scholarship Experience

Before receiving the award, Tyler had already built a strong foundation in aviation, logging over 25 flying hours as part of his PPL training and gaining experience through the Air Cadets, where his passion for flight and aviation discipline developed.

entire PPL syllabus, with clear progress tracking, performance feedback and well‑organised modules helping him stay focused and disciplined during a demanding period of study.

As a result, Tyler developed a comprehensive understanding of key PPL subjects, including flight planning, principles of flight and navigation. He also gained practical experience using tools such as the CRP‑1 flight computer and chart plotting techniques, skills he continues to apply in real‑world flying.

Applying scholarship knowledge to flight training

One of the most impactful aspects of the scholarship was how directly it supported Tyler’s ongoing flight training. By aligning his theoretical studies with his flying hours, he was able to immediately apply what he was learning in the cockpit.

Tyler structured his studies to complete approximately one exam per week, allowing him to finish all required exams just as he reached 40 flight hours, perfectly timing his readiness for the PPL skills test.

Since completing the programme, he has continued to apply this knowledge on every flight, using concepts from across the syllabus to plan and conduct safe operations with greater confidence and awareness.

“After 40 hours, I had just finished my last exam, which meant I was ready to take my skills test. Everything aligned perfectly.”

Challenges and growth

Balancing A‑levels, part‑time work and the demands of flight training created significant time pressure, particularly with the fixed 18‑month exam window. Tyler also faced a setback during his navigation exam, which briefly affected his confidence.

However, through persistence and disciplined study, he overcame these challenges and achieved a strong result on his resit, demonstrating resilience and determination, key qualities for any aspiring pilot.

achievements and

professional development

“Getting the scholarship gave me a real sense of pride. It felt like recognition of how much I wanted this.”

Before receiving the award, Tyler had already built a strong foundation in aviation, logging over 25 flying hours as part of his Private Pilot Licence (PPL(A)) training and gaining experience through the Air Cadets, where his passion for flight and aviation discipline developed. The PPL(A) is the first major qualification for aspiring pilots, combining practical flight training with nine theoretical exams covering areas such as navigation, meteorology and flight planning.

Access to a structured online learning platform allowed him to systematically work through the entire syllabus, with clear progress tracking, performance feedback and well‑organised modules helping him stay focused and disciplined during a demanding period of study.

As a result, Tyler developed a comprehensive understanding of key subjects, including flight planning, principles of flight and navigation. He also gained practical experience using tools such as the CRP‑1 flight computer and chart plotting techniques, skills he continues to apply in real‑world flying.

Giving back and

supporting others

Tyler is keen to support others entering the aviation industry, particularly those preparing for the demanding aptitude tests required in pilot recruitment. He hopes to mentor aspiring pilots through these stages, sharing both his experience and practical insights to help them succeed.

The air league impact

For Tyler, the Air League Groundschool Scholarship was instrumental in turning a challenging timeline into a structured and achievable plan. It provided him with the tools needed to efficiently complete all PPL theoretical exams, build strong foundational knowledge and maintain momentum throughout his training.

The programme not only supported his technical development but also strengthened his confidence, showing him that his ambition and commitment were recognised.

“It really helped me manage my exams and stay on track. Without that structure, it would have been much harder to meet the deadlines.”

Looking ahead

Tyler is now focused on progressing through the RAF pilot recruitment process, with the long‑term goal of becoming a professional pilot in the Royal Air Force. As he moves forward, he continues to build his flying experience while exploring advanced training opportunities and further developing his skill set.

“You have nothing to lose by applying. If you have the passion, it could be the start of a long aviation career.”

The Air League is proud to have supported Tyler on his journey from PPL student to qualified private pilot, and now as he takes the next steps towards a future in military aviation.
