Founded in 1909, we have a proud heritage and strong partnerships with large and influential organisations. As aviation, aerospace and space responds to the challenges of COVID, we are committed to supporting and equipping young people to aspire to join these exciting global sectors.

We seek an inspirational leader to become our next CEO. They will lead our very small, but effective, team, working with our Board of Trustees and Council, to capitalise on our relationships and deliver our mission.

Location: The role is based in Central London managing a small team. This can be flexibly arranged according to the CEO desires, but there is an expectation that 2 days minimum per week would be expected at the London office with home based working / external events for the remainder of the role.

Head office: Currently located in Whitehall, but this is under review but will remain within W1 or SW1 postcode area.

Report: Chair and Board of Trustees

Qualifications: Desirable but not essential to have a background in STEM, charitable operations and aviation.

Recruitment timeframe: Long list for zoom interviews mid July. Short list end of July for face to face interview and short (10min) presentation in South Kensington

Face to Face interviews expected to take place the last week of July.

In post: we appreciate everyone already has other commitments. To that end we will work with the correct candidate to enable a timely arrival into the organisation with an expectation of starting in post in the early autumn by mutual agreement.  

Requirements of the role:

  • A strategic and impactful ‘hands on’ leader involved in daily operations.
  • Flexible, adaptable with a can-do approach and attitude.
  • Evidence of strong influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
  • Commitment to actively seek new approaches, ideas, and challenges.
  • Able to manage the company’s overall development and ensure that general operations run seamlessly.
  • Confident working with a senior and well-connected Board, Government and the leaders of Aviation and Aerospace Industry.
  • Be the key representative of The Air League in communicating important decisions to business stakeholders and the public.
  • Able to make strategic and financial decisions that determine the trajectory of the company with the assistance of treasurer and accountant.
  • Willing to be engaged at all levels with enterprise, creativity and resilience.
  • Able to manage and oversee financing and investment (with assistance from accountant).
  • Confident working closely with the team to engage them and volunteers, to ensure scholarship and event management oversight.
  • Prepared to develop a strategic plan and annual budget for agreement of Trustees and delivering and reporting against that plan.

Requirements of the person:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, with an ability to engage key stakeholders.
  • Open, considerate, and able to motivate and encourage development of team members
  • Logical and well organised with an attention for detail
  • Comfortable with personal administration and report writing to inform trustees and stakeholders of decision-making and strategic plans.
  • Confident in use of spreadsheets and word processing
  • Able to use technology i.e. CRM systems
  • Able to represent the Air League at events from parliament to flying days with a passion for engaging our beneficiaries

Salary Band £75000 – 80000 per annum

Normal hours per week 40 hrs

9am – 5pm Mon – Fri with 60 min break each day.

Weekends / public holidays may be required to be worked as necessitated by the needs of the business.
