Three aspiring aerospace engineers, Tom Adam, Steve Muringoth and Noah Barker, recently completed an intensive two-week placement with Affinity Flying Training Services, gaining hands-on experience across two of the UK’s premier military aviation sites: RAF Cranwell and RAF Valley. The placement, part of The Air League’s scholarship programme, offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the maintenance operations supporting the UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS).
Immersed in Aircraft Engineering Excellence
During their time with Affinity, the scholars worked alongside seasoned maintenance and engineering teams, contributing to the upkeep and readiness of three key aircraft types: the Grob Prefect T1, Embraer Phenom 100 and Beechcraft T-6C Texan. From avionics fault finding and engine testing to line maintenance and regulatory compliance, the experience was tailored to each scholar’s career goals in engineering, ensuring a meaningful and personalised learning journey.
Tom Adam reflected on the value of the placement: “I was able to learn a great deal about maintaining aircraft airworthiness, conforming to both CAA and MAA regulations, and meeting the flight demands of the customers. Visiting both sites showed how important Affinity are in providing the aircraft to train our future pilots and how a smooth operation allows pilots to progress through different stages of their flight training.”
Learning from the Best
Affinity’s commitment to nurturing future talent was evident throughout the placement. Scholars were welcomed into the heart of operations, gaining exposure to both civilian and military aviation standards.
Noah Barker shared his appreciation: “The placement has taught me so much about the workings of a civilian aviation company and will certainly help influence my future career decisions. Spending time with Part 145 was fascinating and has certainly given me a greater appreciation for the aircraft and their numerous systems.”
Steve Muringoth echoed the sentiment: “It was fascinating to gain first-hand insight into the MRO processes that keep the RAF’s training aircraft safe and mission ready. This experience has deepened my understanding of aerospace engineering and strengthened my ambition to pursue a career in aerospace or defence.”
A Partnership Built on Passion
Matt Hooton, HR Business Partner at Affinity, praised the scholars’ enthusiasm: “It’s been an absolute pleasure hosting Steve, Noah, and Tom from the Air League. Their enthusiasm for the aviation industry was truly refreshing and brought a great energy to our teams. Sharing our knowledge with such passionate individuals was rewarding, and we’re excited to see where their journey in aviation takes them.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
The Air League’s partnership with Affinity Flying Training Services continues to be fundamental in developing the UK’s future aviation talent. By offering real-world experience in high-stakes environments, these placements empower young engineers to take their ambitions skyward.
