The Air League Gliding to Solo scholars have been busy completing their scholarships at Booker and the London Gliding Club. Other scholarships are also being undertaken by scholars at Glasgow and Cardiff.
Sponsored by British Airways and Boeing, the Gliding to Solo scheme has been running for over 6 years now and continues to inspire young people through aviation experiences.
The scholarships sees young people from inner city schools complete an intensive two-week residential gliding course at their respective gliding clubs. There have been many success stories this year with several of the scholars achieving their first solo.
In 2018, the scheme has given 60 students access to and experience of aviation through taster days that were run to inroduce students to gliding and to encourage them to apply for the scholarship. Following the taster days, an assessment day for the intensive two-week gliding course was held at British Airways Head Quarters. Overall, eighteen students were selected onto the Gliding to Solo Courses.
The scholarship will be open again for 2019.
