Inspiring Futures Through Collaboration: Reflections from the UK Aerospace Charity Symposium

The UK Aerospace Charity Symposium, hosted at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London, was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when organisations unite behind a common goal. Charities from across the sector came together to share experiences, spark new ideas, and explore how collective action can open doors for the next generation.

Aerospace has always been built on partnership. Every aircraft reflects the combined expertise of countless teams across companies and nations. Yet outreach efforts have often worked in isolation. With around 140 aerospace charities in the UK, each doing vital work, the risk of duplication is clear. The symposium sought to change that, and the enthusiasm in the room showed a strong appetite for a more connected approach.

Janine Hornsby, CEO of The Air League, captured this spirit of continuity and momentum:

“The Charity Symposium builds on the momentum we began at the 2023 Marshall Skills Summit, where industry leaders united behind a shared mission: to collaborate more effectively in tackling the skills and labour crisis impacting our sector. Charities play a vital role in inspiring and preparing young people for future careers across aviation, aerospace and space. Yet, despite our shared purpose, competition for funding can sometimes distract us from what truly matters: supporting the people we exist to serve. By working together, we can dramatically expand our reach and amplify our impact.”

Key Themes from the Day

  • Celebrating impact: Scholarships, bursaries, and outreach programmes are already transforming lives. These stories illustrated how charitable support can shift trajectories and create lasting opportunities.
  • Collaboration as a catalyst: Delegates emphasised that alignment, not competition, is the way forward. By sharing expertise and resources, charities can extend their reach and ensure more young people and underrepresented communities benefit from aerospace pathways.
  • The power of connection: Above all, the event highlighted the value of dialogue. Conversations sparked at the symposium are the foundations of future partnerships and joint initiatives.

As Hornsby noted, the symposium created “the space to forge meaningful connections and identify common goals, ensuring that people across the UK can access the opportunities they need to find their place in our sector.” She also reflected on the symbolism of ‘Ali’, the statue created at the Skills Summit (pictured below):

“Ali stands as a powerful symbol of the sector’s commitment to collaboration, and it was inspiring to see charity leaders adding their pledges alongside industry partners to work collectively to secure the future of aviation.”

David Edwards, Chief Executive of the Royal Aeronautical Society, echoed this emphasis on community:

“For all of those charities operating in the UK’s aerospace world, it seemed so important that we built a community where we could share challenges, share opportunities and, above all, just share time with each other so that we’re collectively able to maximise our impact. Ensuring that we’re educating and entertaining the general public, whilst also building a future for aerospace is a mission in itself – but one, the day has shown, we’re all keen to work towards.”

A Proposal for the Future

One clear idea emerged: the creation of an alliance. A network that promotes, supports, and signposts opportunities across the sector. Building on the momentum of the symposium, an online community has been launched under the name ‘UK Aerospace Charities Alliance’.

At this stage, the focus is on simplicity, no committees or formal structures, just a space for conversation and collaboration. Over the next twelve months, this community will test the appetite for deeper partnership. If enthusiasm continues to grow, the alliance could evolve into a more formal body, capable of delivering shared initiatives such as the Outreach Curriculum discussed during the event.

Looking Ahead

The symposium was not just a single day; it marked the beginning of a movement with a clear vision of building a stronger, more coordinated outreach ecosystem that inspires futures, broadens access, and ensures aerospace is open to all.

Momentum will carry forward through ongoing dialogue, networking, and shared projects. Plans for future gatherings are already taking shape, with a collective task ahead to nurture collaboration and sustain the spirit of partnership that emerged from the day.

A Shared Purpose

The UK Aerospace Charity Symposium demonstrated that working together is not simply beneficial, it is essential. By amplifying each other’s efforts, aerospace charities can inspire the next generation of aviation, aerospace and space professionals, and ensure opportunities are accessible to all.

The future of aerospace will be defined not only by technological innovation, but also by how organisations connect, support, and inspire. This symposium was a step towards that future, one built on collaboration, vision, and shared purpose.

Aviation and aerospace charities are encouraged to join the UK Aerospace Charities Alliance groups on LinkedIn and Facebook, helping to ensure these vital conversations continue to strengthen the sector and inspire future collaboration.
