This summer, The Air League proudly celebrates the achievements of Silke, a remarkable young pilot from Berkshire whose passion for aviation has taken her from simulator sessions to solo soaring. Selected as one of our 2025 Gliding Scholar, Silke’s journey was made possible thanks to the generous support of The Flyer Watch Company, whose donation helped turn ambition into altitude.
From Childhood Curiosity to Cockpit Confidence
Silke’s fascination with flight began at just eight years old. “I managed to land a commercial plane in a simulator and became interested in becoming a pilot,” she recalls. Inspired by the pilots she saw while travelling with her parents, she knew early on that aviation was her calling.
By fourteen, she took her first real step into the skies by starting gliding lessons. Determined to build her skills from the ground up, Silke focused on mastering procedures, safety, and the fundamentals of flight. Today, she’s flying solo and working steadily toward her Bronze certificate and Sailplane Licence.
The Air League Scholarship: A Launchpad for Aspiration
When Silke applied for a gliding scholarship through The Air League, she saw it as a chance to continue flying and invest in her future. “The Air League really focuses on giving more opportunities to young people,” she said. “It allowed me to keep flying this season and save money for my future towards commercial flying.”
Her reaction to being selected? “Absolutely thrilled, and surprised. They’re very competitive scholarships. But it shows that it’s always worth applying.”
Training Days and Sky-High Moments
Silke’s scholarship experience was hands-on and transformative. Each day involved inspecting aircraft, towing gliders to the launch point, and alternating between check flights and solo missions. She steadily built her confidence and logged valuable solo hours.
“Landings were definitely the hardest part,” she admits. “I had to learn how to round out and flare smoothly, aim accurately, and adapt to changing conditions. What helped the most was regular flying and learning from my instructor’s experience. His feedback was invaluable.”
Her favourite moment? “Experiencing a loop in a glider, feeling the G-force and seeing everything upside-down. I’d love to learn more aerobatics in the future. But my first solo flight also stands out. Having that responsibility and freedom in the cockpit was such a big moment.”
Opening Doors to the Future
Thanks to the scholarship, Silke has already earned her cross-country navigation certificate and is close to completing her Sailplane Licence. She said: “It’s made my ambitions feel much more achievable. The extra training and support have opened so many doors.”
Her next goals include completing her Bronze certificate, transitioning to single-seater gliders, and beginning commercial pilot training. Long-term, she hopes to mentor others just starting out, passing on the inspiration she received.
A Partnership That Elevates Potential
At The Air League, our mission is to break down barriers and open the skies to all. With the support of partners like The Flyer Watch Company, we’re proud to offer life-changing opportunities to young people across the UK, helping them take their first steps into aviation and beyond.
Silke’s story is more than a personal triumph. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity. And it’s exactly why The Air League exists.
Together, we’re helping dreams take flight.
