The Air League is delighted to spotlight the inspiring journey of Max, one of the 2025 recipients of our gliding scholarship, generously donated by The Flyer Watch Company. From childhood dreams to cockpit reality, Max’s story is a testament to perseverance, passion and the power of opportunity.

A Lifelong Passion Takes Wing

For Max, a recent graduate from Surrey, aviation has always been more than a hobby, it’s been a calling. “Aviation has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he shared. Influenced by his grandfather’s distinguished career in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and commercial aviation, Max’s early years were filled with airshows, flight simulators and
RAF Combined Cadet Force (CCF) training.

His time at Durham University further solidified his commitment, joining the Northumbrian University Air Squadron and immersing himself in the world of flight. Despite initial concerns about his eyesight, Max discovered that a commercial pilot career was within reach, and he’s been chasing that dream ever since.

From Graduate to Glider

Now working at McLaren Automotive, Max is saving towards his Private Pilot License for Aeroplanes (PPL (A)) and a modular Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). But the cost of flight training remains a significant hurdle.

Max said: “When I came across The Air League, I thought I’d give it a go… and I am so glad I did!” The moment he received the scholarship confirmation; his first call was to his grandfather. “I was absolutely thrilled. I was incredibly proud to have been selected.”

Training at Booker Aviation

Max’s training at Booker Aviation has been a transformative experience. “[It’s been] fantastic, everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. The instructors are brilliant.” His first flight was unforgettable: “The view from the cockpit was incredible, there is nothing like it.”

Each day blended ground study with hands-on flying, from pre-flight briefings to post-flight debriefs. One challenge stood out: adapting to the left-hand seat and a yoke instead of a joystick. “It took time, but practice makes perfect,” said Max.

Reflections and Advice

Max’s favourite moment? “Honestly, everything! It’s just been such a pleasure to be back in the cockpit and flying again.” Beyond technical skills, the scholarship has reignited his sense of purpose. “This opportunity has been fantastic and given me real purpose.”

Looking ahead, Max is determined to reach Solo standard within the year and continue progressing toward his commercial pilot goals. He also emphasised the importance of sponsorship: “Without the support from companies like The Flyer Watch Company, hundreds of young people might never get the chance to experience aviation first-hand.”

His advice to future applicants is simple and heartfelt: “Just do it! You’ll regret it if you don’t. Put in the work and time, this is such an incredible opportunity.”
