Join us on Tuesday 5th November on an exclusive tour of Heathrow Airport’s animal transportation processing facilities! In partnership with Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL), Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC) and Animal Aircare, Air League Members are invited to go behind-the-scenes and explore the different careers available within the animal transportation industry.
The day will begin with a presentation from specialist staff at Heathrow Airport Limited, Heathrow Animal Reception Centre and Animal Aircare, with the aim of educating attendees about the logistic behind transporting live animals. We’ll also be introduced to Heathrow, Britain’s busiest airport, in a wider view, at the Heathrow Academy. We’ll then be visiting the specialist Live Animal Border Control Post facilities at Heathrow Animal Reception Centre and Animal Aircare, giving attendees the chance to learn more about how animals in transit are handled and processed; as well as discussing the challenges that come with preparing and caring for animals ready for flight.
The specialist facilities are temperature-controlled, safe and highly secure environments for handling animals travelling outbound and inbound, and for those in transit for an onward departure. Facilities include spacious dog kennels, catteries, isolation rooms for birds and reptiles, toilet areas, and pet kitchens.
Approximately 19,000 dogs and cats, 400 horses, 2,000 birds, 28 million fish, 50 zoo animals and 150,000 reptiles are imported through Heathrow each year. You’ll have the opportunity to ask the staff on hand any questions about the process of transporting live animals, as well as gain an insight into the broad range of careers available in the sector.
